Helen Russo, Volunteer

Helen Russo, a Xavier University Graduate with a BA (magna cum laude) and MEd, has used her skills as psychologist and teacher, helping countless adults and children throughout various county districts.  During her 31 year career in education, she has presented topics at conventions, participated on panels, conducted workshops and study groups for educators, parents and children.  Some of the areas covered were effective parenting, mental health issues, effects of divorce and death on children and child abuse.

In her profession, she was innovative in helping establish a transitional K-1 class, and a crisis responder throughout the county for suicides, group tragedies.  As a volunteer for the Mental Health Association, she developed the concept of the Magic Circle and trained countless volunteers to bring that program to schools free-of –charge.  She also hosted a weekly radio show, interviewing mental health professionals.

Helen has won countless awards, including the first Amaranth Award given to an alumna, exemplifying the Christian principles of her High School.  She has written manuals and guidelines about many topics, most notably the issue of school entrance.  In her former community, she wrote a monthly column on assorted topics;  interviewed local police and wrote individual columns about them to better police/community relations.  She also established a very active block club named Around the Clock Block Club.

This retired and passionate volunteer has more recently become active and vocal in both local and national issues.  She describes herself as a “defender of freedom and justice. Helen enjoys meeting new friends and challenges, nature, classical music, writing and singing.  As an educator, she is naturally drawn to the Empower U program!
